About PSLF
CHI Memorial Project 120 is a unique benefit for our physicians that provides you with personalized support to pursue Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).
PSLF forgives the remaining balance (principal and interest) on federal student loans after you’ve made payments for 120 months (10 years) on an eligible repayment plan while working for a qualifying employer (not-for-profit or government entity). There are no income ceilings for PSLF and no limit to how much can be forgiven or how many times you can participate.
For many physicians, this forgiven balance could be equivalent to one to two years of your salary, and the best part, the balance is forgiven tax-free!
PSLF seems simple, but it’s easy to make errors that can delay or prevent forgiveness. Participating in Project 120 lets you be confident you’re on track and taking advantage of changes that may get you to forgiveness even faster. For higher-income earners, Project 120 offers advanced strategies to minimize payments and maximize your forgiveness.
I’ve heard PSLF is going away. Is that correct?
PSLF was started in 2007 under the Bush administration and has been in play through all administrations since then. There have been changes to federal student loan repayment programs that have affected PSLF strategy, but PSLF remains a viable program to pursue.
Though unlikely, should PSLF change or go away, existing participants would likely be grandfathered into the program, which is why it’s critical that you get on track for PSLF as soon as possible.
Do I make too much money to benefit from PSLF?
There is no income ceiling to participate in PSLF. Physicians at various income levels have had success with the program. High earners, however, need to be strategic about their repayment plan and tax filing strategy to minimize their payments and maximize their forgiveness. CHI Memorial’s Project 120 walks you through these considerations so that you have the best strategy for pursuing eventual forgiveness through PSLF.
How does Project 120 support me if I want to pursue PSLF?
CHI Memorial partners with Aptus Financial’s team of national student loan experts and financial planners to provide 1-on-1 support for your student loan strategy. To start the process, you will:
· Take a survey and submit your student loan data file
· Project 120 analyzes your student loan file so that you know exactly what your loan situation is and how to ensure you’re on track to benefit from PSLF
· They provide you with a personalized plan of action
· Project 120 delivers one-on-one support and coaching with national student loan experts so you get and stay on track one-on-one email support and phone calls
These charts demonstrate an example student loan payment plan for a physician who begins pursuing PSLF during residency. On the left, you can see payments on an Income-Driven Repayment Plan, eventually leading to $191,000 forgiven, an expected benefit of $116,000 more than paying off the student loans on a 10-year standard repayment plan
